The ultra portable Mac is here: Leopard on Asus EeePC

By Jonathan Schlaffer

The ultra portable Mac is here: Leopard on Asus EeePC While we’re all sitting around waiting for Mac World to get going in January where it is rumored that Apple will officially announce an ultra portable Mac that’s thinner and lighter than the company’s current offerings, dare I say that the ultra portable Mac has already arrived in the form of the Asus EeePC.

The Asus PC has just about everything the Ultra Portable Mac will have, wireless connectivity, no optical drive, small(ish) display though the Mac will have it outdone if rumors come to bear of the 13″ LED display, webcam and even a SD card slot (I bet the Mac won’t have that).

It is capable of running several distros of Linux, Windows XP and with some hacking and a little know-how even Leopard according to Engadget.  While Leopard isn’t the smoothest running OS on the Asus EeePC, it’s been said to be “quite usable” though not all features have been tested nor has hardware compatibility (my guess is there are issues with networking).

However, it is against the Apple EULA (end user license agreement) to run OSX on any computer other than a Mac and besides that, you need to install several hacked files to get OSX to install on any non-Mac and you may have to set the OS to boot manually.

Most of the steps involved require several visits to the command line and near-intimate knowledge of directory structures.

I won’t stop you from doing this because there is little else in this world that is cooler than an Asus EeePC running Leopard but for me it involves too many legal issues not to mention work to get going.
