EliteTorrents uploader faces 10 torrent-less years in the slammer

By Triston McIntyre

EliteTorrents uploader faces 10 torrent-less years in the slammer10 years without a personal computer might cause any sane person to die a little inside.  10 years in prison without a personal computer and a $500,000 fine looming over that same person’s head might make them wish they could just give up the computer for 10 years.

That’s what self-admitted torrenter An Duc Do is facing for uploading a torrent of Star Wars Episode III to popular U.S-based torrent tracker Elite Torrents, according to TorrentFreak.

The FBI and ICE have been working to wrangle everyone they can that was involved in uploading to the site since 2005.

The 25 year old from Florida is charged with both conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement and criminal copyright infringement.  The first charge is infinitely more significant; I’m willing to bet An Duc Do did not consider his role in an illegal ring of copyright-fighting revolutionaries when he chose to upload the rather mediocre flick.

In retrospect, he probably should have just let everyone spend $15 for their own legitimate copies; chances are slim those same people will be willing to pay a penny towards that $500,000 maximum fine.  Hopefully $500,000 was not spent on DVDs of Episode III anyway.

I must be getting old … $15 for a kid’s movie is outrageous. The producers are taking themselves way too seriously. On the other hand, should it become nescesary, I would probably pony $20 to avoid watching it.
