Is a new Nintendo DS on the way? – Rumors and denials…

By Dave Parrack

Is a new Nintendo DS on the way? - Rumors and denials…There were unsubstantiated rumors circulating yesterday of a new lighter Nintendo DS Lite on the way, and now Nintendo have come out and denied these. So is there a redesign in place, and if so, when are we likely to see it?

This all started when Evan Wilson, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities, told Engadget that he had got word from an inside source of a Nintendo DS redesign already being in the bag.

This redesign comprised of a thinner DS, due to the total lack of a Gameboy Advance port, a larger screen, and some in-built memory. Basically, this would be an even lighter Nintendo DS Lite.

According to Wilson’s inside source, Nintendo has already finalised this new hardware iteration, but are putting off releasing it until sales of the existing DS Lite start to slow down, which looking at the latest sales figures, isn’t going to be any time soon.

This isn’t the first time this redesign has been rumored, and the key ingredients are pretty much the same. Nintendo has now come out and rebuffed the story as mere speculation but there’s no distinct denial in their statement on the issue.

Nintendo president George Harrison told Next Gen:

“We don’t have any imminent plans for an upgrade for the Nintendo DS. The product is still selling extremely well around the world. I’m not sure what his [Evan Wilson's] source was for it, but it’s not something you’re going to hear about any time soon.”

So basically, Nintendo DO have plans for a redesigned DS in mind, and it probably is as Wilson’s source described it. But, all the while the DS is selling in huge numbers all around the world, they’d be mad to release it, or even confirm its existence.

Give it a couple of years, and this rumor will more than likely become fact.
