Hack your Microsoft Zune 2 to support more formats and enable flash drive use

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Untitled-2 So, you’ve got your Zune 2 and your sitting around with almost nothing to do except wonder what you can do to make your Zune more useful.  Hack it, of course.  I’m not about to tell you to take it apart but there are some software utilities out there that can increase the usefulness of your Zune.

Channel 10 has listed some interesting things you can do to your Zune, the first one is an extension support mod that increases the number of file formats (audio and video) that the Zune can support.

There’s also a hack that enables the Zune to be used as a flash hard drive but be warned, this hack requires editing the Windows registry so if you don’t know what that is or are a novice PC user, STAY AWAY!

This tutorial shows you how to convert DVD, video, audio, iTunes and YouTube video to the Zune or Zune 2, just skimming over it reveals it to be somewhat involved though it won’t ruin your computer, some less advanced users may be turned off by the number of steps and software required to do it.

There are several more on the site from custom Zune wallpaper to a complete hacking suite, there’s something there for everyone from novice to advanced users.

Ummmm….that multi extension hack is for the old software/firmware. No guarantees it works for the new stuff….do you check the dates before posting?

    2. Jonathan:

Wow, you really have to hunt for that on the site, in fact, it’s not really clear on what versions it supports.

It’s not my job to sort through 40+ comments nor is it my job to sort through a forum where this stuff is listed in a rather illogical manner.

However, your point is valid but you really take your life into your own hands with some of these, I even said as much.

You’ve given me the idea that we’ll have a standard disclaimer on these posts, something to the effect “the author has not investigated the claims of the developer or software in any way, shape or form” and I couldn’t, even if I wanted to as I do not own a Zune, no one around here does.

Dates, yeah, I checked the date of the original post… again, not my job to sort through a site that needs a serious overhaul… if you want that job, we probably have an opening for it.

    3. Ummmm:

hmmm, what exactly is your job… copy and paste without citing the source or fact checking.. It’s unfortunate that your info on this site isn’t as good as your SEO.
