Skip black Friday, shop online
By Jonathan Schlaffer
For those who may not be familiar with it, Black Friday, in the US is the day after Thanksgiving in which stores have very early sales, early bird specials and so forth. The deals offer insane savings on brand new items from TVs to flash drives and everything in between. Some stores open at Midnight, some at 4am, it just depends. I will be skipping all those offers, for one reason, most of these deals can be had online, right now without the hassle.
Okay, so it’s not actually from the store advertising it and I can’t speak for anything other than electronics but over at Tiger Direct and Newegg (two of my favorite online stores) I spotted a desktop for less than $200 with a 3.4GHz processor and 512MB of memory complete with CD/DVD burner (no monitor) and a 1GB SD card (50x speed) was only $4 with free shipping. I dare retail stores to beat that, yeah, didn’t think so.
There was also a 6 Megapixel digital camera with 3x optical zoom for $60. Of course, these aren’t exactly high-end offerings but they are equivalent to the deals many brick and mortar stores are offering, if not completely and utterly clobbering them.
A deal is a deal but I can’t think of any worse torture than standing outside of a store at 4am in 4C temperatures in the rain (as its scheduled to rain in my area). It’s simply not worth it.
Save yourself the trouble, shop online, let FedEx, USPS and/or UPS bring your wares to you, in the comfort of your own home.
As of right now, Newegg and Tigerdirect are both offering early Friday specials with some items selling out or soon to sell out so if you want a good deal, head over there now and shop until your fingers can’t click the “add to cart” or “checkout” buttons anymore.
