Apple can unlock iPhones through iTunes
Apple’s getting caught in its own flawed mess. The company underestimated foreign laws, and now it’s being forced to unlock iPhones in Germany. That’s old news, but the way Apple’s unlocking handsets is what makes this interesting.
Right now, Apple’s only unlocking iPhones sold in Germany. Users have to pay a premium, according to MacRumors, a total of 999 euro for both a regular iPhone and the unlock.
That begs the question: How exactly does Apple unlock the iPhones? It turns out that it’s happening through iTunes. This means hackers may figure out a way to trick iTunes into unlocking any iPhone.
The French government is also expected to force Apple into selling unlocked handsets. Unfortunately for our French counterparts, it’s likely they’ll have to pay a premium for the unlock as well.
After all is said and done, the unlocked units run the 1.1.2 firmware and the process should only take a few seconds to complete.

When you unlock a “locked” phone, you enable it to be used on any GSM carrier such as T-Mobile and AT&T in the USA.

I have an unlocked iphone 3g.
Bought it in Brazil, and by law they MUST unlock it when requested. Did not pay a premium (other then the fact that all tech stuff costs double of what it costs in the US).
Iphone here costs US$ 1200 normal, I got it at US$ 600 for being a good customer that pays a lot per month in cell fees.
Unlock is mandatory here by law
I got it unlocked with itunes, don’t even know how. They told me to connect it to itunes and it would be unlocked
Now itunes asked my permission once to upload new provider data or something similar
