Microsoft finds frosty new data center locale in Siberia
By Triston McIntyre
If you were a software giant looking to expand your reaches to the furthest corners of the earth, where would be the best place to plant your resources? Apparently Microsoft has voted Siberia the ideal location for a new data center.
Why Siberia? This might come as a shock, but apparently in Siberia there isn’t a huge demand for power supply, and Microsoft could soak all that powerful goodness up without fear of competition. That’s why Microsoft is considering locations in both Irkutsk and Angarsk; Siberia doesn’t lose a lot of tourist revenue to these vacation spots, by any means.
This project comes on the heels of Microsoft’s recent announcement of other data center projects in locations including Chigago and Dublin, Ireland, according to Data Center Knowledge.
The governor of the Irkutsk region, Andrei Gubov, said the new data center will have connectivity to the Transtelecom fiber line as well as a 50 megawatt power capacity.
On the bright (or frigid and dark) side, in addition to the abundance of technological resources, the new location should serve as an ideal station to transfer all those employees who have leaked insider Microsoft information.
