Google’s new data storage service defies copyright protection
Google is looking to both revolutionize and standardize online data storage with a new service that will allow users to store documents and media, and access it remotely from other machines anywhere in the world. However, Google could be directly in the sights of large media corporations for allowing users to share their media through speedy remote data storage access.
No word yet as to a debut date; however, the new service will allow users a certain amount of free data storage and will offer larger storage capacities for a fee, and is designed around remote access from machines other than the owner’s main computer, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Specifics of implementation have not been confirmed by Google, however one representative dropped a tantalizing innuendo that the ability to access documents and media is important to utilizing web applications in consumers’ day to day lives.
The most controversial element of this new service is, according to the Wall Street Journal, the ability to share those shared files with whomever users’ please; can anyone say huge copyright infringement implications?
If the large media corporations are miffed by users slowly acquiring copyrighted files through means like torrents and other P2P systems, how happy could they possibly be with Google openly endorsing and supporting a program that will allow users to quickly upload and download their friends’ material whenever they like?
In truth, online data storage is nothing new; its very easy to share an account with a friend and access each other’s material. Google would be foolish to endorse such illegal activity; however, because Google is so large and implementation of such a service will undoubtedly be outrageously successful, the online giant runs the risk of starting a very nasty war with the media groups.
Just the mere suggestion that the new Google service could provide a quick and easy means to exchange media will raise the attention and suspicions of those media companies out to defend against copyright infringement. This could signify the beginning of a very large conflict between advancing the focus and direction of the internet for a bettered user experience and protecting the rights of those who produce copyrighted material.
