Google releases Google Maps Mobile 2.0 with “My Location”
By Danny Mendez
Today, Google released version 2.0 of its popular mapping software, Google Maps for mobile phones. Most of the update isn’t a big deal, although one feature stands out: My Location.
My Location, accoding to the press release, enables non-GPS phones to find their approximate location. The technology itself isn’t anything new to the mobile phone arena, but the it has been, until now, absent from Google Maps Mobile.
The popular mapping software determines your location by using nearby cell tower ID information. It can’t give you your exact, exact location in the world, but it comes very, very close.
Although GPS endabled phones don’t need My Location, the technology provides a quicker response than true GPS phones. My Location also works in areas that GPS signals can’t reach such as underground locations or inside buildings.
The free softare is available from Google at www.google.com/gmm. Google Maps Mobile is designed to work on most smartphones, including many BlackBerry devices, all Symbian Series 60 3rd edition phones, most Windows Mobile phones, newer Sony Ericsson phones, and some Motorola handsets.
You can be sure this will be a part of the final Google Mobile phone OS known as Android. You can check out a video demo of soon to be released mobile OS here.

Big deal. What if I walk down a street and see a sign for a free pizza at Little Ceasars. Can I click on the logo to find the nearest location relative to my position on a map? That is what I want. Will little Ceasar’s offer a $1 off when the logo is clicked and I show them the redemption coupon on my mobile when I pay? What if I say the keyword Pizza in my mobile browser will it take me to all of the locations relative to my position on a map? Right now, pretty useless if you ask me.
I think Google’s developers need to think a little better.
