Syria begins blocking access to FaceBook

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Syria begins blocking access to FaceBook Facebook, the ever popular social networking site is now blocked in Syria.  The most prevalent explanation right now is that this is to block Israeli “infiltration” of Syrian social networks on the Internet.

Yahoo News says that the site has been blocked for what is now going on two weeks, press reporters have been getting blank pages when trying to access the Facebook homepage.

The Syrian government was unavailable for comment because of the Muslim weekend but it’s been said that Syrian authorities began blocking Facebook on Nov. 18 because Israelis have been entering Syria-based groups.

Of course, human rights groups have entered the fight, accusing the Syrian government for also blocking opposition sites and anything that is critical of President Bashar Assad.
