They should talk. The funny thing is that this is about popular music which is all about sharing. This music shares the same harmony, simple melodies, and often banal structure. Being derivative is what this is all about. It wouldn't have relevance otherwise and it wouldn't be popular if people didn't share it with one another. That part isn't going to change any time soon and 50c seems to understand that. What many people don't get is that this is not about the music or musicians. This is about the record business and maintaining control. Making money is always about gate keeping and that means politics and technology. Now the technology is changing and it's time for someone else to make money. History repeats itself. I always get a kick out of the pathetic protestations of the music industry … pirating indeed. It's a bit of a flip from what record labels are used to, but this has apparently been the case in China (where piracy is rampant). Music artists over there adapted to this climate and shifted their business models to making money from other means: live performances, merchandise, ringtones, commercial licensing, and corporate sponsorships. Of course, not every small artist could do all of that, but perhaps other revenue generating models will emerge as this industry continues to evolve. Just a thought. Here’s an alternate view.
