NBC teams up with SanDisk for new download service
By Sean P. Aune
It would seem that NBC is going through a bit of online video version of an identity crisis. Perhaps adding a third venue was a wise decision?
Since NBC parted ways with Apple’s iTunes store, it seems unable to decide on just one way to get its properties out to the consumers via the Internet. First there was NBC Direct which allowed for free, ad-supported, downloads of NBC properties, but only for a limited time. This was followed by Hulu which allowed you to watch the shows online, but with no download option.
So where was the option for a way to download videos permanently? That is where the new deal with SanDisk comes into play.
Utilizing their new Fanfare download service, users will be able to download the videos of NBC properties starting in January. You will be able to watch the videos either on your computer or on your TV via the Sansa TakeTV device.
It does seem rather curious that NBC would team up on a totally unproven variable when the shows were already on one of the biggest name brands in the business. The shows have been reduced from being featured on a popular store and device to being on an unproven, niche, device.
NBC may want to seek help for their completely erratic decisions that are sure to do nothing but confuse consumers.
