Blogging turns ten years old

By Jonathan Schlaffer

allblog Today is a special day that all users on the Internet should celebrate, even those with MySpace and FaceBook pages.  Sure, there were online journals and message boards way before 1997 but a term was coined in 1997 that probably changed the world forever.

The term “blog” is reported to have been coined by Jorn Barger when he combined the words “web” and “log” to describe his online journal.  Of course that was weblog which was quickly shortened by the community to “blog.”

According to ArsTechnica, Dave Winer, the so-called “father” of RSS spoke was interviewed by Cnet where he attributed the coining of the word “blog” to Barger.

It is still undetermined as to what exactly constitutes a blog.  Should a blog consist entirely of opinion, news or a combination of the two.

A friend of mine absolutely detest the term “blog” and I’d agree with him.  Blog is what I typically associate with things that I won’t read, daily journals of a persons life is one of them and is therefore, a blog.

Before you go calling us here at Blorge a “blog” – we’re not a blog, we’re “Blorge.”
