Google News mutates, gains filtering powers
Google has announced some new advanced features for its news search, including the ability to restrict results to specific sources.
With all of the information flitting around the web, sometimes it’s important to find a reliable source. Google has made that easier by allowing users to specify what sources they’re interested in.
For example, you might want to check out all of the Hulu coverage published by the New York Times. Command line junkies should surf over to news.google.com and type in hulu source:”new york times”
Point and click people head over to news.google.com too, but click on the “Advanced news search” link in the upper right. That will bring up the screen below.
Plug hulu in to the with all of the words field, and new york times in to the return only articles from the news source named field.
Either way, that search yields a short list of 2 results, shown below.
Also, according to Google, “you don’t need to spend time trying to remember the complete name of a news source any more. Just tell us the words you know: [source:"new york"]. Then we will return articles from those sources whose name contains these specific words”.
While you’re typing the source information, Google will also make some live suggestions. FireFox can conflict with that feature though because the browser tries to make suggestions based on your past entries at the same time.
Overall it’s a great way to connect with sources you trust! And just for fun, here’s a list of all of the articles TECH.BLORGE.com has written about Google in the Google News index.
