FCC announces potential bidders for 700MHz band auction

By Sean P. Aune

FCC announces potential bidders for 700MHz band auction While most of the talk has been focused on Google prepping to bid in the upcoming 700MHz auction, there are 265 others out there who also want a piece of this pie.

The FCC released two PDF files today showing the approved applicants for the auctions, and those still needing to file more paperwork.  Those who are not yet approved have until January 4th to finish the process.

While the lists seem to have most of the suspects one would guess to be involved (Google, AT&T) there were a couple of surprises.  One has to wonder why Chevron, an oil company, would be looking to purchase some wireless spectrum.

The most interesting inclusion has to be from the approved list in the form of “Vulcan”.  This is a company formed by Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen.  What he wants to do with it is unknown, but considering his love of philanthropy, one could imagine he might have some ideas for low cost, or even free, service for people.  Only time will tell on this one.

With 266 players in this auction, it is sure to be an interesting battle to watch.
