Player price drops expected in the HD DVD vs Blu-ray war
By Sean P. Aune
For those of you sitting on the sidelines in the HD DVD vs Blu-ray format war, your decision may get even tougher in 2008 with dropping prices.
Prices for entry level player high definition players have already dropped below $200 for HD DVD and $300 for Blu-ray. The question remains if they can drop even further, enticing more consumers to finally pick a side in the fight.
According to a market report issued by Understanding & Solutions, the economics of scale are finally catching up with the hardware, and we will indeed be seeing lower prices in 2008. Their current prediction is for average prices, not the entry level models, to fall to $275 for HD DVD and $475 for Blu-ray. And by 2011, if this war continues that long, players for both formats would be in the sub-$100 region.
The benefit to consumers right now is that the seeming underdog position of HD DVD is causing them to be far more aggressive, and consumer friendly. HD DVD players have already been sold for under $100 this holiday season, and they are giving away movie discs like there’s no tomorrow. Some players are coming packaged with multiple movies, and then offers to mail away for five more, and depending on the day at Amazon.com, you can catch many “buy one, get one free” sales.
As if the decision making process wasn’t already cloudy enough, it just got a bit worse.
