Although it is more and more rare these days, the US Government can still get it right once in a while. Recently they decreed that all NIH research must be released to the public for use one year after publication in their own journals. The decreed portal for publication is Pub Med, and the law changing the NIH public access policies is the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2007 (HR 2764).

The US Transportation and Security Administration has been slowly adding to the list of things passengers can’t take on planes; next on their list will surely be toenails and fingernails, as they could be carriers of bio-toxic hazardous material, but for now the department is settling for banning disposable lithium-ion batteries. Why? Because they’re a dangerous fire hazard, silly!

Amazon’s managed a coup in its campaign to be the MP3-seller king of the heap by doing what Apple’s iTunes hasn’t: gotten Warner to license its tunes DRM-free. Bad enough that Amazon already sells its tunes at 89 cents – ten cents cheaper than iTunes.

Few people know this: you can extend the warranty on your Zune for an extra year. Unless you’ve had a problem with your unit, you probably aren’t aware of the policy. Despite what others will tell you, this is why you should avoid extended warranties on not just your Zune but your iPod too.

Breaking technological news in the medical field happened when researchers from two separate labs successfully created stem cells from adult cells. Stem cell research has been the source of great controversy in recent years because of the need to use embryonic cells to reap the benefits of stem cell regeneration. With this new door opened, stem cell research has turned a significant corner, with several news outlets comparing it to the old alchemists goal of turning lead into gold.

The Everex gPC is a low cost computer that runs gOS, a customized version of Linux with the enlightenment theme, features mundane hardware and clocks in at $200 without a monitor. Some reviews have come in and there is little to distinguish the gPC from low cost Windows based PCs.

I love the Internet, yes I do. But there are times when I feel somewhat overwhelmed by it or more correctly, by information overload. Research firm Basex estimates that the interruptions and loss of productivity information overload causes has a high cost: USD650 billion, to be exact.

Since going public, Vonage has seen a barrage of lawsuits from Sprint Nextel, Verizon, and most recently AT&T. Vonage just settled its latest dispute with AT&T, capping its loss at $39 million.
