Enemies in the HD DVD vs Blu-ray war team up for WirelessHD If the HD DVD vs Blu-ray war has done anything for consumers, it has added more cables to our lives.  So isn’t it time we all went wireless?

Sony and Toshiba, the backers behind Blu-ray and HD DVD respectively, have announced they are teaming up on a new project dubbed WirelessHD.  The hope is that this will put an end to the ever increasing number of cables that everyone has in their lives connected to their TVs.

If all goes according to plan, the fledgling consortium will soon be announcing the addition of computer chip maker, Intel, to their ranks.  This should allow for easier manufacturing of the needed parts.

The new technology is going to operate somewhere around the 60GHz spectrum, making it less likely to interfere with other wireless equipment in a home, and be able to transfer data at high speeds to maintain quality.

Chips will be built in to new devices so that customers won’t have to purchase an add-on to their set, but no word if any devices will be released for existing sets.

The fact Sony and Toshiba are able to work on this together, considering the seeming war that exists between them over high definition format DVDs, is surprising.  Maybe they could finally talk and agree to end this silly schoolyard fight while they’re at it.
