Netflix and LG eliminate the middle man with a set top box

Netflix and LG eliminate the middle man with a set top box If you are tired of the lag time between adding a movie to your Netflix queue and receiving it in the mail, LG Electronics and NetFlix have you covered. They are currently in talks to produce a set top movie rental box that would replace the days of the paper mailer, further roof the traditional postal service is becoming more and more obsolete.

When I first heard the news, I was skeptical. I already have a plethora of devices in my media console to deal with, and adding yet another single function box did not appeal. Then I read further and saw that LG wants it to be part of their DVD box line at no extra charge, adding the technology as a feature instead of as a stand alone unit.

That’s an idea that appeals to me, especially if they include it in their existing dual format box that supports HD DVD and Blu-Ray. As a consumer that would eliminate the need to decide between two formats when buying movies – I’d plunk down serious cash to avoid having to wait while the powers that be figure out if they want the world to be Blu-Ray or HD compatible (remember the years of Beta versus VHS, and all that technology Beta users got stuck with and had to replace?).

There is no official word on the cost of subscribing to the new service, or whether the old-school paper mailers will still be an option. Either way, replacing my current DVD with a multi function box that included movie rentals is an appealing idea.
