Many consider the HD DVD vs Blu-ray war over, but someone forgot to tell Toshiba
By Sean P. Aune
With the news of Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema leaving HD DVD, many people seem to thing the HD DVD vs Blu-ray war is over. Someone seems to have forgotten to inform Toshiba.
With the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) just firing up in Las Vegas, Toshiba has gone on the record of saying that their third generation of players was the most successful yet.
Jodi Sally, Vice President of Marketing for Toshiba’s Digital A/V Group, said “We are pleased with the consumer acceptance of our HD DVD players in the market.” She also went on to say that the format had marked significant accomplishments in 2007. (it’s just 2008 that seems a bit shaky so far…)
There was a thinly veiled swipe at their competition, and the fact that Blu-ray is still developing their standard. Yoshi Uchiyama, the Group Vide President for Toshiba’s American Digital A/V Group, said “Because HD DVD is a standardized format and meets the spec guidelines mandated and approved by the DVD Forum, it provides a consistent platform for all applications of next generation high definition video.” One supposes he should get in the swipes while he can.
It’s true that the format is not yet officially dead, and it’s also true that there will still be some new product coming out in 2008. You would be hard pressed to deny though that things don’t look good for the format.
There is sure to be some more news coming out of CES on this matter, and we will be bringing it to you as quickly as we can.

The next time one of these Toshiba clowns says they are offering the best product I want someone to ask them how it can be the best product when it now cant play 70% of films?

Everybody with a little bit of sense saw it coming. Arguing whether Blue-ray or HD-DVD is better is just like arguing whether 50 Gig Drive or 30 Gig drive is better. Blue-ray always wins. I just feel sorry for the people who got duped into those cheap $199 HD-DVD players. I guess they can always use them for paper-weights or door-stops…

John:
I’m using mine as a DVD player. Works great for that. I can wait until a non-crippled Blu-Ray player comes out now. I mean, there aren’t really that many titles in either format that I want…so it’s a good thing that SD DVDs look great on an HD DVD player.
