Status of Paramount in the HD DVD vs Blu-ray war is uncertain

By Sean P. Aune

Status of Paramount in the HD DVD vs Blu-ray war is uncertain Last night it looked like Paramount was about to leave the sinking ship that is HD DVD, now it doesn’t seem so certain.

According to the Financial Times, who used unnamed sources, Paramount is ready to leave.  According to Bloomberg, which got a company rep to go on record, they’re not going anywhere.

Under the current exclusivity contract that both Paramount and DreamWorks SKG Animation have with HD DVD, they are locked into the format until February 2009.  This arrangement came about this past summer and included a reported $150 million dollars in incentives.  With the good ship HD DVD quickly taking on water from the loss of Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema, can the format even last that long?

HD DVD seems ready to try to keep up their part of the fight, but with only being able to provide content to consumers from two Hollywood studios, it may be a difficult road for them.
