Tru2Way headed to a cable television near you

January 8, 2008

Tru2Way headed to a cable television near you Cable companies in the United States are making some changes to the industry that could have far reaching effects in the world of gadgets. Right now, your television provider requires their own specific set of hardware in order to work with your television and other gadgets. Cable companies are now working on a universal format they have dubbed Tru2Way that will eliminate the need for company specific devices.

That’s right, with Tru2Wayyou won’t have to have a set top box from your cable company to enjoy your favorite television. Your favorite television would be Tru2Way compatible. When will this amazing technology be available? Don’t hold your breathe.

Tru2Way has been in development for over ten years already. It is conceivable that it could be another few years before the first Tru2Way compatible devices are available. Meanwhile, cable providers Cox, Comcast, Time Warner and others are working to upgrade their networks to Tru2Way technology to be ready for the new devices.

Why the sudden push for this kind of cross platform compatibility? Some suspect the cable giants are trying to head the FCC and its OpenCable idea off at the pass:

Craig Moffett, senior analyst at Sanford Bernstein, said the industry is sending a hands-off signal to the Federal Communications Commission. Last summer, FCC officials said they would soon take on the issue of two-way compatibility between consumer electronics and cable systems.

Whatever the reason behind the new technology, it’s been a long time coming, and it may not be in time to offset the FCC’s interest in the cable behemoths practices.
