HD DVD vs Blu-ray war grinds on with dual format products coming out

By Sean P. Aune

HD DVD vs Blu-ray war grinds on with dual format products coming out The Consumer Electronics Show had several dual HD DVD and Blu-ray format devices announced.  It seems no one saw the Warner Brothers/New Line Cinema pull out coming.

Samsung said at a press conference that they are moving ahead with their dual-format players, the BD-UP5000 and the BD-UP5500 which we already covered.  They do not see any reason to change their position while HD DVD still has 30% of the content being released.

The question remains what tactic the other manufacturers will take.  LG is already out in the marketplace with a dual-format player.

Buffalo announced at CES an external dual-format player for computers that will also record to Blu-ray media.  The device, the MediaStation Blu-ray HD DVD (BRHC-6316U2), is due out in the first quarter of this year with a suggested retail price of $649.

There might actually be a slight up tic in dual-format device sales as HD DVD supporters make the slow, but seemingly inevitable, change to the Blu-ray format.
