How do you get HDTV x2? A TV with frickin lasers!

By Matt Jansen

How do you get HDTV x2? A TV with frickin lasers! Imagine sitting down in your living room, pressing a button and sighing in relief as a sunny vista of palm trees and clear blue seas fills the room. Laser TV hasn’t gotten that far yet, but it can display the most advanced 3D content available today.

At CES, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, Inc. presented a new larger laser TV that “delivers as much as twice the color of current high-definition televisions”.

Though current HDTV is a noticeable improvement over traditional TV, it “display[s] less than 40 percent of the color spectrum that the eye can see. Now, for the first time ever, laser produces twice the color. Laser beams provide the widest range of rich, complex colors, along with the most clarity and depth of field.”

More color is great, but Mitsubishi took the entertainment experience even further by adding the capability to “[deliver] a true 3D viewing experience”.

From food production to electronics, today’s consumers are more interested in preserving the environment than ever before and laser TV rises to the challenge. It’s “energy efficient, consuming less power than comparably sized flat-panel sets.”

Mitsubishi is appealing to a growing consumer demand for richer entertainment experiences in the home. The company describes itself as “the world leader and innovator of large display high-definition televisions.”

Laser TVs provide additional color by harnessing “three distinct wavelengths: Red, Green and Blue.”

Here is a summary of laser TV’s advantages:

- light weight and lower price tag than current HDTV rates

- lower power consumption than LCD and plasma

- narrow form factor

- about double the color spectrum

- longer lamp life

- screen stays bright for the lifetime of the laser TV
