Toshiba wins award as evidence mounts of them losing the HD DVD vs Blu-ray war
By Sean P. Aune
With the ceaseless wave of bad news that’s been crashing against the good ship HD DVD, Toshiba, the main backer of the format, has to be happy with any piece of good news they get at this point.
It was announced today that Sound & Vision magazine, a leading publication about home audio and video, had named the Toshiba HD-XA2 HD DVD player their 2007 Editor’s Choice.
“The Toshiba HD-XA2 is a great example of a product that combines outstanding engineering and design to create an excellent value for the consumer,” said Mike Mettler, the Vice President and Editor-In-Chief of the magazine. He also went on to note that the player was one of the best upconverting players in the marketplace.
This news, while good for Toshiba, unfortunately comes at an awkward time for the brand. With the recent defeats they have suffered in the HD DVD vs Blu-ray war, it seems a foregone conclusion that HD DVD will end up being the loser in the format war. With the recent departure of several film studios, such as Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema, the format is struggling to provide consumers with enough content to warrant their purchase of an HD DVD player.
For those who still want to support the format and purchase a player, they will find that the HD-XA2 is no longer in the product line-up. However, as we noted recently, Toshiba has dropped the price on all of its currently produced players.

What you failed to include is that if someone want’s to buy a new XA2, they can from Onkyo! The Onkyo HD DVD player is basically a re-badged XA2, and has ALL of the same capabilities as the XA2.
