Sophos advises not to fall in love with the Storm Trojan Horse
By Jonathan Schlaffer
It’s a new year and it’s time for some new malware attacks and Sophos is reporting on an email with malicious links that’s making the rounds.
The email poses as a message of love or romance and includes a link to an IP-based website. You should never click on a link in an email if you aren’t sure of the origin and especially NEVER click on a link that goes to an IP-based website.
According to Sophos, subject lines in the email vary but may include something like "Falling In Love with You", "Special Romance", "You’re In My Thoughts", "Sent with Love", "Our Love Will Last", "Our Love is Strong", "Your Love Has Opened", "You’re the One", "A Toast My Love" and "Heavenly Love".
When the user clicks on the link contained in the email, it displays a large red heart while installing malware in the background.
Analysts from Sophos believe the download worm is designed to download further code from the internet and turn the PC into part of a "zombie" network which would be used to send out spam or launch other attacks on the behalf of hackers.
This email attack currently accounts for eight percent or one in every 12 email based attacks seen by Sophos.
I suggest installing or updating your security software, our sister site, VISTA.BLORGE.com has some tips on that.
