Force your Zune to masquerade as storage device or iPod
Ever been sitting around with your Zune wishing you could use some other program besides the Zune Software? Now you can with a few easy software hacks, a program has come out that will “trick” your Zune into working with other programs.
The program is called zAlternator and it will allow your Zune to work with iTunes, Windows Media Player (WMP), Winamp and Media Monkey.
Most of the modes should be self-explanatory except for WPD mode which enables WMP, Winamp and MediaMonkey functionality with the other modes being iPod and the Zune Program. Using the Zune program with this software seems to defeat the purpose but it is in there.
WPD mode simply says the Zune is a mass storage device of some kind that files can by synced to, iPod mode tells iTunes that the Zune is actually an iPod that it can sync libraries with.
ZuneBoards has all the instructions you will need to get up and running your Zune with something besides the Zune Software. There’s nothing too difficult and the iPod mode has not been fully tested by the author but it “should work.”
Then again, I don’t think any self-respecting Zune user would have their library in iTunes and no iPod user would stoop so low as to use a Zune but I can see the WMP, Winamp and Media Monkey functionality being useful to some.

well, if you could tell me where to get the elusive zalternator AND tell me whether it has a Mac version, that would be cool. Have a client who switched from windows to a Mac but gave away his iPod and bought a Zune…
