EA to release Battlefield Heroes for free

January 22, 2008

EA to release Battlefield Heroes for free The next game in the Battlefield series made by EA (Electronic Arts) is to be Battlefield Heroes but more importantly, it will be released for free.  Battlefield Heroes isn’t related, in the strictest sense, to the other Battlefield games because it takes a new approach to the series.

This game is a “cartoony” first person shooter that “caters to players of all skill levels – easy to pick up and play, but with deep character development.”

The game appears to lack a single player campaign in favor of concentrating on the online play aspect.  It’s up to you to decide if that’s a good thing or bad thing.

Gerhard Florin, EVP Publishing Americas-Europe at EA said, “Online gaming garners a massive audience.“  He added, “With Battlefield Heroes, EA brings its first major franchise to North America and Europe with a new distribution model and pricing structure adapted to the evolving way that people play.”

Pricing structure?  I’ll try not to read into that too much but just because the game is free to download does not mean that access to the gameplay will necessarily be free or maybe there is some optional “premium” content that you’ll be able to pay for.  We’ll see when it’s released.

EA is convinced that Battlefield Heroes will attract both casual gamers and those who played the other more serious Battlefield games.  It is set for a Summer 2008 release, look for it here.

This wouldn’t be anything new really.
