Warner Brothers extends support of HD DVD in the HD DVD vs Blu-ray War

Warner Brothers extends support of HD DVD in the HD DVD vs Blu-ray War HD DVD may have just gotten itself another three weeks of life support, but will it make a difference?

In what can only be viewed as “extending the pain”, Warner Brothers has decided to extend their support for HD DVD for an additional three weeks, making their departure in June now as opposed to the original time in May.  According to an article on TG Daily, this will also allow them to release the Will Smith film, I Am Legend, to both formats.

It was the announcement by Warner Brothers earlier this month that started the ball rolling that seemed to spell doom for the HD DVD format.  They were soon followed by New Line Cinema and HBO, leaving HD DVD with only Universal, Paramount, and DreamWorks SKG Animation to fully support them.  And, to add insult to injury, porn companies started switching over to Blu-ray also.

Try as Toshiba might with price cuts to their players, it seems fairly certain that Blu-ray has run the war.  HD DVD disc sales are down this month, the format can’t seem to get a foot hold in any country, and retailers are now announcing they will decrease shelf space for the discs.

Though I personally went HD DVD fight, even I have to admit, it’s over guys.  Last one out turns off the lights.
