WoW! - World of Warcraft hits 10 million subscribers

Blizzard have today announced that World of Warcraft has passed the benchmark of having 10 million subscribers worldwide. The role playing epic is now officially the most popular online game in all regions.
For those who don’t know, which basically means hermits who have been living in holes for the past 5 years, World of Warcraft, or WoW as it more commonly known, is an MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) which requires users to buy the game disc, and then sign up to play over the Internet for a monthly fee.
Today’s announcement is an astonishing one, showing just how much interest there is in online games, particularly MMORPGs. It’s no wonder so many games developers are trying to come up with their own versions which they hope will do half as well as WoW.
Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, said in the press release:
“It’s very gratifying to see gamers around the world continuing to show such enthusiasm and support for World of Warcraft.”
“We’re always pleased to welcome new players to the game, and we’re looking forward to sharing the next major content update with the entire community in the months ahead.”
Although World of Warcraft is big everywhere, it seems countries in Asia are the kings, at least in terms of sheer numbers. Asia accounts for 5.5 million subscribers, while North America has 2.5 million, and Europe just 2 million.
Blizzard have done an incredible job at getting World of Warcraft to where it is, releasing the main game in seven different languages, as well as the The Burning Crusade expansion pack which was released last year.
A second expansion pack, titled Wrath of the Lich King is currently in development, which should help stop veterans from getting bored of the game, as well as tempt a whole new generation of gamers in to the addictive realms of WoW.
