Yahoo’s layoffs to go ahead
By Erna Mahyuni
Follow-up to the story we ran on the Yahoo layoff rumours - well, looks like they’re going to happen and soon. That’s the buzz from the source of the original story anyway.
Silicon Valley Insider claims a source revealed Jerry Yang’s already decided on going ahead with the layoffs. And the number will likely be in the 1,500-2,500 range as SAI reported though NYT’s more cautious estimate ranged in the hundreds.
According to SAI’s source, the names have been finalized over the weekend but despite that, some of the employees concerned won’t know till February 12th, earliest.
It’s funny how Yahoo’s stock rose 20% on the news of layoffs but is headcount reductions all that’s needed to buoy Yahoo’s fortunes? One reader commented that ultimately lessening the ‘worker bees’ as he called them won’t change Yahoo’s future unless the top brass themselves stop making disastrous decisions.
Reducing costs is all well and good but what Yahoo’s experiencing is a drought of good ideas. Trimming costs to keep them out of the red is only going to help them so far but until they can map out a clearer direction instead of becoming the poor man’s Google, Yahoo is doomed to being the also-ran. This is no time to play the straight man when Google’s laughing all the way to the bank.
