Sharing Media the Nokia Way – RIP Twango, hello Ovi
Remember when Nokia bought over a little media sharing startup named Twango last year? Well, Twango is no more – the name, that is. The little basement startup that could is now part of Ovi, Nokia’s new service brand.
Twango’s Jim Laurel announced the name change on the site’s blog. Besides Twango now being named Share on Ovi, Laurel talked about the changes to the site: “We’ve also streamlined the user interface with simpler navigation, better search options, new ways to explore and an improved help system.” The site has also gone through a design revamp – going for a look and feel that will also be used by upcoming Ovi services.
Of particular interest to Nokia owners is the “Share Online” application that will allow them to capture and upload photos and video to the service direct. As of press time, the app is yet to be available but Laurel states the download link should be available within the next few days.
Share on Ovi isn’t the only web app to leverage Nokia’s multimedia phones on steroids like the N95. Net startup Flixwagon, currently in Alpha, allows for video broadcasts from your mobile phones, including but not limited to high-end Nokia devices. It seems it’s no longer impressive for a phone to just be able to play video (like Samsung’s Divx-supporting F500) but high-quality video capture just might be the new most desired feature. With affordable all-you-can-eat mobile internet plans to entice amateur mobile videographers, 2008 might just be the year of the mobile videocaster.
