Look at it this way: players will need to be able to decode the disc to play it, and since it is not possible for all players to be able to do some sort of verification before decoding, there must be some sort of “master key” that will decode the discs. Crackers can surely figure out a way to convert that hardware decoder to software.

HD-DVD does NOT have the same copy protection as DVDs. Copy protection for DVDs is based on the never-intended-to-be-serious Content Scramble System. HD-DVD and Blu-ray both use the AACS key management system. Blu-ray has additional layers of protection, including BD+, a programmable, renewable protection technology that was recently acquired by Macrovision. BD+ has not been broken.

Yes, DVD X Copy was once the best DVD copy software, but Hollywood shut down 321 Studios. Thankfully, there are dozens of alternative DVD burning software programs, and the best DVD copy software programs are listed ranked and reviewed at: http://www.dvdxcopy.com . Consumers will never EVER pay multiple times for the same movie (i.e. DVD, HD DVD, BluRay, PSP format, etc. etc.) and until then, there will always be DVD copying programs to rip, burn and copy DVD movies.

HD-DVD has the same copy protection as Standard DVD. Blu-ray's copy protection changes and evolves from disc to disc.

In order to consistently copy Blu-ray discs you'd need a separate program for each different disc, making it non-economical for pirates.
