Microsoft delays Red Zune 80s, misses Valentine’s Day release

By Danny Mendez

Microsoft delays Red Zune 80s, misses Valentine's Day releaseThe new red Zune 80 was set for release on Valentines Day, but Microsoft may miss the date. The company is sending mass emails announcing the delay to customers who preordered the new Zune.

Accompanying the release of the new model, Microsoft also announced the availability of 20 new designs available until February 14, Valentines Day. But it seems Microsoft isn’t great with commitments.

Today, Stefan of ihaveazune received the following email from Microsoft:

We wanted to provide you with an update on your order status. Due to some issues in our fulfillment center there remains a chance we will miss getting your Zune to you by February 14th. We are working hard to get your order to you as quickly as possible and we currently plan to ship your Zune within the next 3-4 days. Once your order is in transit, we will send you a shipping confirmation with a link for tracking.

Our goal is to provide a smooth customer experience for ordering, customization, and delivery. We sincerely apologize for not meeting that goal in this specific case. We will be refunding the entire amount of your order, which you should be able to see on your credit/debit card within 7-10 days. We hope you love your Zune and that you will accept our sincere apology.

This delay is highly inconvenient especially if you planned to package the Zune as a Valentine’s Day gift, but it’s extremely graceful of Microsoft to provide a refund.

So the red zune is basically just two different covers and they couldn’t order them far enough in advance to avoid this problem. Really bad (and expensive) inventory control. When you add in the never ending 360 rings of death, you gotta wonder why MS is in the hardware business. Advertising (Yahoo) should definitely be their focus.

It’s more than a refund, it’s a free Zune. Since VD is on a Thursday, take the money and spend a weekend away with whoever you are giving the Zune to, and I think all will be forgiven.
