File-sharing advocate site TorrentFreak hacked…or quieted?

By Triston McIntyre

File-sharing advocate site TorrentFreak hacked…or quieted?Many supporters of file-sharing have long looked to the site TorrentFreak for the most up to date news on all topics related to torrents, file-sharing, and the like; however, a site like that has to have more enemies than one can count on 5 fingers. Upon visiting the site today, it would seem that the powers that be have finally managed to silence one of the largest voices for file-sharers…at least for now.

I went to visit TorrentFreak today to read a piece on Yahoo! taking the outrageously popular torrent site ThePirateBay from its search listings, but was shocked to find this simple, yet very clear, statement awaiting me:

we killed torrentfreak

Obviously, my first reaction was to think that someone managed to slip in behind the security protocols that TorrentFreak has and post a funny little comment like this. Upon further clicking, I landed on the homepage of TorrentFreak, and found this image awaiting me:

So, it would appear that, unless the folks behind TorrentFreak like playing practical jokes on the blogosphere and file-sharing community, someone has managed to put the site to rest for the time being. The main page’s images could lead one to believe that legitimately powerful government organizations have managed to shut TorrentFreak down; however, the “we killed torrentfreak” message doesn’t have quite the same professional feel that the main page does.

What could it mean? I haven’t the slightest clue. If anyone knows the folks over at TorrentFreak, it might be a good idea to knock on their door and make sure they’re still home, if you catch my drift.

    1. Gavin:

      u can still access the stories by substituting http://torrentfreak.com for http://69.65.29.20/

      then amend the story name so for the yahoo story:

      http://69.65.29.20/yahoo-filters-pirate-bay-080218/

      I had a friend come to this url;
      http://tech.blorge.com/Structure:%20/2008/02/18/file-sharing-advocate-site-torrentfreak-hackedor-quieted/
      They are on ComCast. Their firewall was shutdown for work and not restarted. TWICE they were disconnected from the ‘net when coming to it?! A third try did NOT result in disconnect! SOMEONE please check it out!

      thanks, Gavin.

      JRude, I can’t really explain why your friend’s connection was dropped twice; our servers have been running strongly all day.
