iTunes breezes by Best Buy to become the number two music retailer in the US

iTunes.jpgAlong with the updated MacBook and MacBook Pro Apple announced that iTunes has breezed past Best Buy to become the number two music retailer in the US. This was measured by unit volume, market researcher NPD Group. The top position is held by Wal-Mart. Featuring over 50 million iTunes customers their combined purchases has surpassed four billion songs. On Christmas day iTunes sold over 20 million songs. iTunes offers the world’s largest music catalog and boasts over six million songs from all major and independent labels.

“We’d like to thank the over 50 million music lovers who have helped the iTunes Store reach this incredible milestone,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. “We continue to add great new features like iTunes Movie Rentals to give our customers even more reason to love iTunes.”

In November 2005, Apple broke into the top ten surpassing Tower Records, Sam Goody, and Borders. iTunes had held the number three position since last June.

iTunes was recently updated to iTunes 7.6.1 which improved compatibility with Apple TV. Movie rentals are a recent feature to iTunes standard-definition movie rentals are $2.99 for library titles and $3.99 for new releases. HD movies are available for a dollar more. You can rent them directly from your wide-screen TV via Apple TV. I now manage all my music with iTunes. I haven’t purchased a CD in a few years. In a small way I, along with many of you, have contributed to their continued success.
