About.Com CEO to step down
About.com, one of the longest running blog networks, is losing its CEO, Scott Meyer. In a surprise move, considering his eight year history with the New York Times Company, Meyer’s departure was leaked earlier today. About.com confirmed Meyer was indeed leaving and that his last day at work would be Thursday of next week.
Meyers said in a phone call with reporters earlier that he was leaving the About Group, a division of The New York Times Company, on a high note. He spent 3 years working as the CEO of About. During that time he helped steer About to solid ground.
Meyers wrote a memo to the About Group staff discussing his departure. An excerpt:
“After almost 3 years at About and almost 8 years with The New York Times Company, I am moving on. After discussions with Martin, we’ve agreed that I’ll be stepping down from my position as President & CEO of the About Group and leaving the Times Company. My last day in the office will be on Thursday, March 6th. I am incredibly proud of all that we have accomplished together as a team at About. The About Group is in a very strong position. I will miss not being a part of About’s future, but I’m confident that the Group’s best days are ahead.”
He will be leaving About Group in the hands of Martin Nisenholtz and Ron McCoy, with Martin taking the main lead role. It isn’t clear if Martin will retain the role long term or simply act as interim head. Meyers and the rest of the senior staff seem to think that About Group has established a hearty enough internet presence to withstand the abrupt change.
