Sony’s starting a new advertising platform designed to make in-game ads easy and open on the PS3. The move will likely catalyze the in-game ad market, which is becoming increasingly complicated for ad-serving companies.

Everyone is familiar with the household name Comcast — though everyone associates it with cable in some way, many associate it with underhanded business practices. That is exactly what the FCC is trying to determine at a series of hearings currently being held at Harvard; the FCC will potentially force service providers to provide steady and consistent service, something that Comcast is notorious for not doing.

Ok — everyone and their grandmas have a Facebook account nowadays, and many of those accounts have become cluttered with applications, bumper stickers and the like. Dare I say that Facebook was approaching dangerous MySpace-like waters? The good folks at Facebook might have realized the error in their approach, because Facebook will be adding tabs to user profiles to relieve all the clutter and nonsense.

The Asus EeePC is the little laptop that could. Fitting in the UMPC class, it is a small lightweight laptop but some say it could be more powerful. The Celeron M processor used in it is not exactly fast. The upgrade is not for the weak-hearted as some soldering is required.

Along with the updated MacBook and MacBook Pro Apple announced that iTunes has breezed past Best Buy to become the number two music retailer in the US. This was measured by unit volume, market researcher NPD Group. The top position is held by Wal-Mart. Featuring over 50 million iTunes customers their combined purchases has surpassed four billion songs. On Christmas day iTunes sold over 20 million songs. iTunes offers the world’s largest music catalog and boasts over six million songs from all major and independent labels.

Microsoft is trying to gets its OOXML (Open Office XML) certified by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization). Google instead wants Microsoft to comply to the same standards as everyone else with Open Source. OOXML is not a truly “open” technology, and still allows Microsoft some restrictions on its users, while Open Source is just that: completely open.

How is this for irony? Sony wants to make it easy for consumers to copy music. A new turntable announced by Sony will allow music to be transferred from vinyl to a PC over USB, allowing consumers to convert the music to digital storage.

The Encyclopedia of Life project aims to aggregate information for all of the 1.8 million known species and publish it on the Internet. It will pull content from a series of scientific databases and focus on engaging the scientific community to add content as the project matures. Will that strategy, in its scientific niche, work better than Wikipedia’s more open approach?

Nokia and the University of Cambridge have shown a concept mobile device at the ongoing “Design and the Elastic Mind” exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The concept device, dubbed “the morph”, which would be built using nanotechnology, could define the mobile device of the future if Nokia manages to turn it into reality some day.

Not content with acquiring VG Holdings, EA Games is gunning to takeover beleaguered games company Take-Two Interactive. They’ve gone so far as to make a $2 billion unsolicited bid…which the Grand Theft Auto Guys turned down.

For many people today, eBay isn’t just a place to participate in the sales and purchases of auctions — it is a way of life. That way of life was drastically challenged when eBay recently announced negative changes to the fees and feedback system which resulted in a seller boycott. The boycott is definitely having an impact, causing a 13% drop in total site auctions.

The Internet has raised the bar substantially in terms of the knowledge base and sheer content that is now available to the general public. Unfortunately, not every country’s citizens are being afforded the same rights to view whichever websites they desire, as China is now trying to eradicate any undesirable website from the Internet.
