Maxell ends in-house production of DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Maxell ends in-house production of DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs It’s an end of an era; very soon that pack of Maxell DVDR discs you just bought will not have been made by Maxell.  The company is ending in-house product of all types of optical media; including, DVDs, HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs.

All production of discs will be stopped by the end of March and outsourced to another company.  Though, the discs will still carry the Maxell name.

What’s the point?  If a company is not going to make discs then it shouldn’t make discs, outsourced or not but maybe I’m missing something.

It appears that from the Japanese translation, the company is going through some organizational and personnel shuffling.  What that has to do with ceasing production of its own discs, I’m not entirely sure.

If you’re feeling up to it, you can read the roughly translated English from Japanese version of the announcement.  Beyond what is stated here; it’s hard to tell what’s going on.

As for the quality of the discs, no comment.  To me, a disc is a disc is a disc.  Buy whatever is on sale, but some of you out there no doubt have a preference.  Decide now if this is going to bother you and maybe choose a new brand to buy.
