FutureShop offers $100 off Blu-Ray players with HD-DVD trade-in
By Jonathan Schlaffer
Blu-Ray has won but that has left some wondering what to do with their now mostly useless HD-DVD player. You could keep it as an upconverting DVD player, keep it to play your existing HD-DVD collection or dump it completely for Blu-Ray. If you belong to that last option then FutureShop has your solution.
FutureShop is a division of US-based Best Buy which was re-branded for Canada. According to the company, about 35,000 Canadians invested in an HD-DVD player. If you want to get $100 off a Blu-Ray player, take your HD-DVD player to any FutureShop location between March 7 and April 3 to get the discount.
The HD-DVD player could have been purchased at FutureShop or another retailer, it doesn’t matter, the company will take it regardless of where it was purchased. To get the $100 off you’ll have to purchase a Samsung or LG Blu-Ray or Blu-Ray/HD-DVD combo player.
Speaking for FutureShop, Eric Stockner, Director of Merchandising, said, “Future Shop recently announced the change to showcasing Blu-ray and liquidating HD DVD players; We recognize that some customers will jump into Blu-ray but others who invested in HD DVD, and started to build a library of movies, are interested in a transition and combo solution to the new Blu-ray home theatre and entertainment experience.”
Your old HD-DVD player won’t go to waste either. FutureShop will donate them to the Boys and Girls club of Canada for “use in their after-school and evening programs.”
Since FutureShop is offering this program, I wonder how long it will be before Best Buy offers a similar promotion. It would make sense because for all intents and purposes, they are the same company.
