Barak on my Blackberry. Will Hilary be next?
DipDive, a grassroots website set up to support Barack Obama, and BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) are collaborating to bring you Barak on your Blackberry, although I doubt RIM really has that intention.
Since DipDive is heavily weighted with positive Barak Obama information and stories it will be unavoidable. Hillary Clinton and John McCain will have to scramble to get apps of websites that focus on them added as well.
Having a strong web presence is seen as crucial in presidential campaigning this year, but not necessarily the only avenue politicians should take (eg. Ron Paul). Now it seems that getting an application/gadget added to smart phones is the next step in campaigning. Just imagine having the latest pictures, videos, and “talking points” for each candidate literally in the palm of your hand. No need to actually access the Internet, the latest info is right on your smart phone desktop ready to be viewed.
Since both Barak and Hillary have Blackberry’s that they check frequently, it will be interesting to see if Clinton’s campaign comes back with a potential Blackberry desktop application of its own. As for John McCain, well there is a mention of McCain on DipDive but it is not the most positive of references.
Having viewed political campaign ads ad nauseam since 1976, I am not sure this is a positive move. Granted, this would be an opt in situation where you can choose to have DipDive or some future political applications, added to your smart phone…or not. Most of the time muting the television during these ads is easy. Muting the nitwit who just has to show the latest on (fill in the blank with any politician’s name) on their smart phone is not going to be so easy.
Still, rather than having to watch television or scour the Internet to get the latest on the candidates, you can just click on your smart phone. Taking a few moments to read up on the current arguments and counter arguments before you head out to meet with friends. When the argument gets heated, you just whip out your smart phone, click on the application, and wave the truth in their faces. Ok, so you might be minus one smart phone if you actually do try that approach, unless you decide to invest in one of the rugged smart phones that are becoming available.
