The Everex "green" gPC isn’t so green

By Jonathan Schlaffer

The Everex "green" gPC isn't so green Everex has been advertising its gPC desktop as being “green” but reviews say otherwise.  Aside from the software, driver and operating system issues; the desktop wastes plastic and isn’t as environmentally friendly as the company would like you to believe.

It was light on power usage being between 20W and 50W but that did not take into account monitor usage.  Otherwise it was below average on the “green” factor.

According to PCMag, the gPC doesn’t support the energy saving “S3″ sleep mode and the plastic/metal case is mostly empty, occupied by a Micro-ATX motherboard, power supply, hard drive, optical drive and non-functioning modem.

Everex is working to provide drivers of the gOS operating system but don’t hold your breath.  It would have been cheaper just to leave the modem out.

There may be a few scant users still on dial-up but usually the minority lose out.  As long as you have high-speed Internet, you’re fine; because the LAN drivers actually work.

Sure, it’s cheap at $200 but has been pulled from Walmart stores for mostly unkown reasons.  It will still be sold in Walmart’s online store.

Maybe Everex should have tried GLaDOS because it’s easy to deal with a computer that’s trying to kill you but one that doesn’t have working drivers is a nightmare if you need that hardware to work.

If you’re interested in a real “green” PC check out the Mac Mini which scores high on the “green” factor.
