YouTube updates API to provide content to other sites

March 12, 2008

YouTube updates API, enables chromeless player Google has decided to make a few updates to its YouTube streaming video service.  The changes will allow “more direct access” to YouTube.  One of the changes to the API (application programming interfaces) will allow the use of “chromeless” players; ones that don’t have the standard YouTube interface.

This means that YouTube could become a service that delivers video content into other applications and will also give YouTube a larger library of videos.  According to Cnet, that larger library could be used to deliver some kind of advertising.

There are already some applications that use portions of YouTube without advertising it.  One of them is the Songza music streaming service which servers as an interface to the audio portion of the YouTube database.

YouTube stated in its announcement,

“The enhancements to the YouTube APIs and Tools offering are free and easy to use, giving YouTube users yet another way to engage the world of video and actively participate in the YouTube community wherever they are, whenever they want.”

In addition to this, TiVo will be making YouTube videos accessible from a TV through its Series3 and TiVo HD DVRs (digital video recorders) later this year.  TiVo and YouTube is almost a match made in heaven.  But, sometimes things that look good on paper don’t always work out in practice, let’s hope that isn’t the case here.
