County DA placed on trial for building "backup server"
By Jonathan Schlaffer
The only real way to get a computer customized to your needs is to build it yourself; just don’t do it on the Government’s dollar. A county District Attorney has been placed on trial for building what he called a “backup server” but was actually a computer used to play the latest and greatest games.
When the FBI examined the computer, it found almost no work related content on the computer. Rod Gregg told the Dallas News that 80% of the content was personal and not work related.
The computer was equipped with, “two hard drives, seven fans, high-end video and audio cards, a wireless Internet connection and cables that glow under ultraviolet light.” Prosecutors say the system is designed for playing games; not for backing up data.
One of the investigators said, “I would not configure a backup computer in that way.”
The District Attorney spent funds allocated for office expenses, equipment and employee salaries to build the computer. Assistant Director for Rockwall County, where the case is taking place, said the computer belonged in a college dorm due to its design.
Ray Sumrow, the DA that is facing trial for this infraction may face additional charges due to other alleged misuses of funds.
