Dell denies increased failure rate of solid state drive laptops

March 19, 2008

Dell denies increased failure rate of solid state drives Dell offers the option of getting a solid state drive (SSD) on some of its laptops but Avian research claimed the return rates were much higher than that of traditional laptops.  An analyst with the company claimed that the SSD equipped laptops were being returned at a rate of 20% to 30% as opposed to 1% or 2% for traditional hard drive laptops.

Additional claims among SSD returns include the unreliability of the devices, slower performance or other technical failures attributed to the technology.

It’s becoming a case of “he said, she said” with Dell saying that’s absolutely not the case.  In a recent posting to the official Dell blog, Lionel Menchaca says,

“Our global reliability data shows that SSD drives are equal to or better than traditional hard disk drives we’ve shipped. Beyond that, return rates for SSDs are in line with our expectations for new technology and an order of magnitude better than rates reported in the press.”

He goes on to say that Dell’s data shows that SSDs fall in line within normal reliability standards and offer faster startup and improved access times.

Maybe.  Dell itself has a stake in SSD technology so of course it would say that, whether it is true or not.  Cnet sides more with Avian because in its tests SSD was comparable to or was slower than traditional 5400RPM laptop hard drives.

Decide for yourself but I’m more inclined to trust a third party than Dell itself.
