Mozilla: Firefox 3 "almost ready," due for final release in June
Firefox 3 is almost ready for the masses to devour. Mozilla has said development is complete and will be released to the public shortly. The use of Firefox 3 betas was discouraged due to the (possible) instability of those versions.
The previous version of Firefox, Firefox 2 has been out since October of 2006; Mozilla has worked long and hard on Firefox 3 and it’s about to pay out.
Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla Corp Vice President of Engineering , said in an interview, “In many ways it (Firefox 3) is much more stable than anything else out there.” Not only more stable but Firefox 3 beta 4 has been shown to use less memory and is just as fast as Safari on Windows.
The final touches and housekeeping is being performed on Firefox 3 and Mozilla hopes to have it “out the door” by the end of June.
The company reminds us that Firefox 3 beta 4 should only be used by testers and developers but the speed increase and better memory usage are too much to turn away from. Provided you aren’t attached to a plugin that can’t be used in Firefox 3 beta 4, there’s nothing wrong with using it as your primary browser.
Reuters says that a fifth revision of Firefox 3 beta is due in which Mozilla will be, “tuning the visual look and feel of the program” and further improving its stability.”
