State Department fired staffers for Obama passport breach
When the news that Barack Obama’s passport file had been breached came out, people wondered who would have to shoulder he blame. The answer came swiftly as the State Department fired two staffers and reprimanded another in the wake of the scandal. The third may yet be fired as well once more information is known about their involvement.
At first the news was that the file had been breached and the staffers knew about it and didn’t report it. Now it has come out that the staffers themselves were the ones who logged in to snoop into Barack Obama’s passport file. Each of the three employees were contract employees.
What would motivate someone to violate the privacy of a political candidate through electronic snooping like that? You might think money or some other personal gain. You might even think they were spying for one of the other candidates. You’d be wrong on all counts.
The three miscreants were doing their computer tip toe for nothing more than morbid curiosity. It is a terrible way to violate someone’s trust, and an indication in this age where the Real ID Act is being pushed so hard to the detriment of Americans of just how insecure government data can be. Passport files contain personal information that includes name, birth date and social security number, among other things, and any violation of that data creates a real risk for identity theft and security lapses.
