Blizzard prepares Latin American WoW release

By Erna Mahyuni

blizzard-logo-largeThey just announced their Russian version days ago, and now Blizzard is bringing the Orc hordes to Latin America.

World of Warcraft has already been localized for the European Spanish speakers but the makers behind Starcraft decided to share the gaming love…in Spanish.

According to the release on Business Wire, Blizzard’s serious enough about the move to hire a dedicated Spanish-speaking team for their Irvine, California and Austin, Texax offices. Interested? Blizzard has positions for customer service, quality assurance, community relations, and web teams. A spanking new website for the game’s North and South America-based Spanish-speaking players is also in the works. Hop to  www.blizzard.com/jobopp if you’re interested.

Though this localised game is based on the European Spanish version, it will have the bonus of all new re-recorded in-game speech. Expect to see this version in ’select markets’ in Latin America throughout the first half of 2008. Spanish-speaking natives of the US and Canada will also have access to the version.

Pretty smart of Blizzard to attempt to further expand the market, what with the looming upcoming releases of new MMOs like Conan and Warhammer Online. Last year’s Lord of the Rings Online earned rave reviews but made little of a dent in WoW’s massive global market share.

“Making World of Warcraft more accessible to gamers around the world has been a longstanding goal for us,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “Spanish-speaking players on our North American realms have already shown a great deal of enthusiasm for the game, and we’re pleased to be able to offer them a fully localized version.” The game is already available in English, French, German, Korean, and European Spanish, with Russian in the works.
