YouTube RickRolls viewers for April Fools Day

By Dave Parrack

YouTube RickRolls viewers for April Fools DayToday is obviously April 1st, which means the World Wide Web is full of April Fools Day jokes. Some are obvious, some are subtle, some are just pant-wetting funny. And my favourite so far is YouTube RickRolling it’s huge global audience.

RickRolling, for the uninitiated, is a prank which has been doing the rounds on the Internet for over a year now.

The prank takes its cue from an older forum prank called Duckrolling, which would see you click on a blind link thinking you’d be taken to a site or story related to the discussion, only to end up viewing a picture of a duck on wheels.

The Rick Astley version of the gag sees the same set up, but instead of a duck on wheels, you get taken to an image, video, or audio clip of Rick performing Never Gonna Give You Up, his one well known hit from the late 1980s. Not only is the song cheesy as hell, the dance is unmissable.

YouTube has managed to RickRoll its community today by making all the ‘Featured Videos’ on front page redirect to the original video of Astley doing his thing.

RickRolled On YouTube

I kind of feel bad for any of the people who uploaded the ‘Featured Videos’ today, as their moment in the spotlight has been hijacked by Rick, but apart from that, it shows a moment of light hearted humour on the part of the Google owned video sharing site.

What’s more, this is likely to increase the popularity of the RickRolling phenomenon, so expect it to start happening more and more over the next few weeks around the Internet. You have been warned.

Well apparently, Rick Astley isn’t the only former singer celeb being rolled. MC Hammer has now fallen victim to the craze, as people are now getting “HammerRolled”.

A website located at http://HammerRolled.com explains this version of the gold ‘ole Rick Roll.
