Details emerge on Apple 3G iPhone - $399 and less plasticky
By Dave Parrack
I say details, when I what I really mean is rumours and speculation, as that’s all that these “details” and all the other “details” are and have been been over the past few days. Then again, it does prove how many people are impatient about the new 3G iPhone.
This week has been iPhone 2 rumour-mongering heaven, and its continuing unabashed. First we had respected technology journalist Walt Mossberg claim he knew that the iPhone would be released within 60 days, and then he changed his mind, and decided his comments had been taken out of context.
Now, TG Daily is claiming to have inside knowledge on some details about the 3G iPhone’s design and pricing.
Citing the usual suspects of “industry sources”, the site claim that the iPhone will be launched at WWDC (Apple Worldwide Developers Conference) 2008 in June.
This would certainly tie in with the other speculation over a June launch. Plus, it’s not too hard to imagine, seeing as WWDC is the next big event on Apple’s calendar, so would be the prime time to officially unveil the new product.
Apart from that, TG Daily suggest that there will be at least two models released, an 8gb one and a 16gb one, priced at $399 and $499 respectively. This basically puts the pricing strucure on a par with the current iPhone, so again, not too hard a assumption to make.
As for how the 3G iPhone will look, well, again according to those ever present sources, the new iPhone will change slightly. It will have a thinner body, shaving 2.5mm off the original (which isn’t really worth bothering with), and will have a different style of casing.
This casing is said to have been designed to give the new iPhone a less plasticky feel than the current generation one. Personally I find all Apple products to be a bit plasticky, but that’s my problem.
In essence these new rumours could all be supposition, being facts created by just assuming how Apple is going to play the market, but without confirmation from the company or Steve Jobs himself, then there’s no guarantee that any will be true.
I do however think that there’s no smoke without fire, so the June unveiling does seem to have some merit. The rest of it? Take with a pinch of salt, and just be patient.
